If my child already owns a laptop, is my child able to use his/her own laptop?

No.  A 1:1 learning program is successful when everyone, including teachers, works from an identical platform with identical software. This is analogous to students reading the same edition of a textbook or the same translation of a classical work. Every student in grades 7-12 is required to use the same school-issued device while in school.

What are the hardware and software specifics of the 1:1 learning laptops?

MPS acquired all new 11" Lenovo N22 Devices at the start of the 2017 school year. These are the machines that will be utilized until the 21-22 school year. These machines offer long-life battery technology and a durable enclosure.. They will receive an extensive array of software, including Pearson On-Line Curriculum, Office Productivity Software, and have access to several cloud-based resources

How is this paid for?

The laptops were paid for by the MPS Bond Issue in 2012. Students will carry these laptops for no less than four (4) years. Please note that parents and families are liable for the cost of per incident repairs by paying a monetary fee for the price of the device, or community service. These actions will be set by the 1:1 Review Committee on a case-by-case basis.

What support is there if my child encounters a problem?

MPS has Lenovo certified technicians on staff, educational technology coordinators at each campus, and specially trained student "device leaders" to help with problems that might arise. In addition, there is a 24-hour support email address where you can submit a repair ticket. Also, Pearson has extensive resources for FAQ and aid when dealing with the on-line curriculum

What happens if my child’s laptop breaks?

MPS reserves a small pool of loaner machines available to students in the event that this occurs. Additionally, there are the Middle and High School Help Desks. These are places where students can bring laptops during the school day for solving routine and easy-to-fix problems. If a laptop is physically damaged, it will go to the Help Desk for inspection, and a ticket will be opened with the Committee to discuss liability.

Do students have access to enough power to the use the laptop in class throughout the school day?

Yes. The Lenovo N22 comes equipped with the latest in long-lasting battery technology that will enable a student to use the computer for an entire school day if they practice proper power management techniques. There is information on the MPS website about ways to manage battery life.

Can my child put their own music, etc. on the school issued laptop?

Yes. Students are allowed to use the computer for personal and recreational purposes that are in-line with home practices and expectations as well as the MPS Acceptable Use Policy.

Is there anything a student or a parent has to do before receiving a laptop?

Yes. All students receiving a laptop must have a legal guardian sign off on the Computer Loan Agreement. This is a binding, legal document and a commitment from the family.

My child doesn’t have great basic tech skills. Are they going to be able to get training and help?

Students are always welcome to come to the Help Desk for assistance with devices or just to learn a new piece of software. In addition to trained faculty, there are students from the “Student Tech Laptop Leadership” group available to help peers with technical questions and issues.

If my child is using an MPS computer, does that mean that MPS is monitoring the use of it at home?

No. When students are away from school, they will not be using the MPS network. Just as is the case now, a student will have read the MPS Acceptable Use Policy prior to receiving the computer and will be expected to use it responsibly. **HOWEVER** web activity is still enforced on any MPS computer anywhere in the world. The Acceptable Use Policy is enforced on the device even away from campus.

How are issues of inappropriate usage being handled?

Issues of inappropriate usage will be handled in the same way they are now. Infractions of the AUP are considered disciplinary issues and are handled accordingly, on a case-by-case basis by building administrators.

How can I be sure that any social media, web communication, or on-line portal is safe for my child to use?

MPS is very careful about the types of information we ask students to enter into on any online platform. All faculty consult with the technology department prior to computer use, to ensure that all tools are vetted and that proper protocol is followed, for ensuring the safety and privacy of information. Away from the school, students will not be asked to partake in any on-line ventures that would not be allowed at school.

How are the teachers instructed on how to teach using laptops?

MPS has a long tradition of extensive professional development, and the faculty has been engaged in training for laptop use in the classroom. Other professional development opportunities and collaborative instructional design with technology takes place regularly throughout the school year.

Is my child able to keep the MPS laptop during breaks during the school year?

Yes. The laptop is checked out to the student for the entire length of the school year.

With a school full of laptops, how do students keep track of their own?

Students are encouraged to personalize the school-issued backpack, or provide their own backpack. When the child is not using the laptop, or walking the halls, it MUST be placed in the unique backpack. Additionally, each individual laptop is labeled with a unique ID the child will recognize as the one issued to them.

When my child hands the laptop back at the end of the year, how can I be sure their private information will be deleted/erased?

Every summer the laptops will be retuned the school, and each laptop will re-imaged with new content and data, thus destroying the data partitions that were previously on the laptops.

How do I connect the laptop to my home wireless network?

There will be brief tutorials on how to perform basic tasks on your laptop available on the MPS website.

Can I install parental controls on my child’s laptops, such as Cisco Valet?

No. Installing parental controls directly onto your child’s school-issued laptop will interfere with the MPS technology department’s ability to maintain, manage and support the hardware and software on the laptop, which allows your child to access resources during classes. The laptops carry the same policies applied to them as if they were at school. The same rules apply regarding internet traffic whether they are in class, or in the Bahamas.

Can I create my own account on my child’s school issue laptop?

No. The reason for this is that adding an account can compromise the security of the laptop and impair our ability to support and maintain that laptop. In addition, students are responsible for any actions taken on their school-issued laptop, which includes the creation of a secondary account and for any subsequent violation of the Acceptable Use Policy - be it knowingly or unwittingly - by a second user.

What websites are filtered on these devices?

MPS blocks websites and web-based services that the administration deem to pose a threat to the safety, security, and well-being of its community members, facilities, network, and resources. Categories that are blocked include: pornography and sexually explicit material, criminal and illegal activities, weapons and extreme violence, computer hacking, spyware and malicious software, and certain video streaming sites. MPS will continue to take precautions regarding this type of material on all equipment that is part of the district’s network.

If my child is leaving MPS before summer, what is the procedure for returning the laptop?

The student must return the laptop and power adaptor on or before their last day of classes. Students will be contacted via the building principal and/or counselor about the specific details (if any) found regarding misuse or needed repair of the laptop.

What should I do if my child’s laptop needs service over a school-break?

If the laptop is physically damaged like a cracked screen or broken power adapter, you must contact a member of the technology department. Director of Technology Eric Wells will field all contacts and make arrangements for issues like these on a case-by-case basis. We ask that you NOT take the school laptops to 3rd party repair shops.
