The Muskogee Public School District began transporting students to school in September of 1898.  However, busing was only available to children living in rural areas up through 1960 from the best of our knowledge.

In 1928 Grady County had a truck with a covered bed on the back of it with a stove in the center to keep the children warm that was used to transport children in rural areas to school.  In 1939 Choctaw, Oklahoma and Grove, Oklahoma had six school buses.

From the information gathered the soonest that Muskogee Public Schools had actual school buses was in 1958 or at least that was what we could find documentation of.

The Transportation Department employees consist of thirty-seven (37) bus drivers, (10) bus assistants, (3) mechanics,(1) secretary, (1) dispatcher and (1) Transportation Operartions Manager for a total of 53 employees.

We have thirty-five (35) routes. Among these routes are (26) regular routes, (5) Special Ed Routes, and (4) District Assigned Routes.

The Transportation Department provides busing for students from Pre-school and through the 12th grade. Students must be eligible to ride a school bus that equates to the student living 1½ miles from the school site or crossing a hazardous street to get to their school site.

The Department transports approximately 2800 students daily.
